The Source of Greatest Evil?

What is the source of the greatest evils in our world? According to Adam Smith (1723–1790) Theory of Moral Sentiments, Part 1, Section III, Chapter III: “This disposition to admire, and almost to worship, the rich and the powerful, and to despise, or, at least, to neglect persons of poor and mean condition, though necessary both to establish and to maintain the distinction of ranks and the order of society, is, at the same time, the great and most universal cause of the corruption of our moral sentiments.”

Hello Mark,

I talked to you at the Oasis Conference after your talk about ICR and your sabbatical. I'm the "home-schooled" seminary student.
I enjoyed talking with you and hearing you speak to during the weekend. Please check out my blog sometime.

So is this a necessary evil? If the class difference were eradicated, would it be the source of greatest good?

Good post.

This sounds like the foundational philosophy of [some of] the Catholic priests and the American Amish.
How are we able to discern who is truly rich and who is truly poor while we are tied to our earthly bodies?
Was this universal cause of corruption found in that fateful day at Eden?

I have been thinking a lot about James, where he said that to be a Christian means that you do not show favoritism. This means treating everyone same, or at least not treating those you think are less than you as if you actually thought that. And I really mean that. We have those thoughts in our hearts. Who is not guilty of this sin? And who doesn't size up every single person they meet?
We attempt to read each other, assess worth and then write each other off so easily. I see it everywhere. I see it in myself.
So, its really quite a thing to do. And so very hard. Impossible really, unless your heart is changed.
