Great Sermons

Apparently Mark has been sending his dissertation manuscript to Rob Bell at the Mars Hill Bible Church in Grand Rapids, MI. I would recommend all of you to go to http://www.mhbcmi.org/listen/index.php and download the sermons "The Mystery of Christ" and "Palm Sunday." He does an outstanding job of explaining Jesus political methodology of servanthood, self-abnigation, and the non-violence example Jesus modeled up against the worlds method of power and violence. We can learn not only from his material, but also from his pedagogy. It is good stuff.

His sermon "Our body and their blood" on Christian's response to war was similarly in this vein. I'd recommend it.

Mystery of Christ.
Good message in regards to his topic, Great teaching about how the Christian should live out a life of denying and taking up that cross. But some things bothered me about how timid he is on some key issues. Bottom line, we need a savior not just for the troubles in this present world, but also for our eternal soul. He just seems to dance around sin in general, like it’s hard for him to admit that people are sinners and that without repenting and putting their faith in Christ they are on the broad road. Kind of Brian McLaren’ish in that he presents a feel good Jesus and hides the parts that he’s not comfortable with. Maybe that’s just me though. I don’t think presenting people with hard truths is any more unloving then telling a man he has to get up and run to escape a burning building. I think that any message that hasn’t warned sinners of the eternal judgment that awaits them apart from Christ has failed to meet it’s most basic objective.
